COLLEGE STATION-People are stepping up to find new ways to save money and improve the Earth. And Tuesday was the day to find out how doing something little can go a long way. According to a recent poll, 47% of young people say that there's not enough focus on the environment. So the A&M Architect students started the Maroon is Hreen and took "going green" to the next level.
Architect students kick off the first annual Maroon is Green event in honor of Earth day.
"We learn about sustainability and living green in our classrooms but we look at the College of Architecture and we weren't really practicing what we preached," said Briana Morrison, President of the A&M American Society of Landscape Architects.
Architecture student organizations demonstrated scrap eating worms that finish up leftovers and light bulbs that can be energy and money sufficient. They also put a lot of effort into their new ways of recycling.
"This is a student led initiative. We bought a number of recycling bins for aluminum and plastic. We're going to have bins on every floor," said Phillip Rollfing, Director of Communications for the College of Architecture.
After a full day of demonstrations and speeches, students say that this event should hopefully teach people how to treat the environment.
"I think it's a first step in changing the world literally," said Morrison.
