A step forward for guns on campus

BRYAN- Texas college students are one step closer to being able to carry guns on campus.

The bill was approved by a Texas House Committee on Wednesday afternoon.  Reportedly, a majority of lawmakers in the House say they will vote to pass it when it comes up for a full vote.

The bill would allow students at public universities to carry their guns on campus.

However, there are restrictions.  In order to carry a gun on campus, students would have to be at least 21-years-old.  They would also be required to have a concealed weapons permit, pass a training course, and pass a criminal background check.

The bill was co-sponsored by State Senator Jeff Wentworth, a Texas A&M graduate.  Wentworth has said he wants to prevent another university shooting rampage, like the one at Virginia Tech two years ago.

Yet, some have said it's just too dangerous to open campuses up to guns.   After Wednesday's vote, opinions are still mixed.

"People will be safe, people will have the right to protect themselves, just like they are anywhere else," said Daniel Crocker, a member of Students for Concealed Carry On Campus.

"Obviously I don't want it to pass, but if it does, there are still steps we can take to have a gun-free campus," said Teddy Wilson, a member of the Blinn College Democrats.

If the bill passes, students would be able to start carrying their guns on September 1st.
