Local students need community's help to achieve dream

BRYAN- They're some of the brightest students in Texas, but now the students of Harmony Science Academy in Bryan are looking for help from the Brazos valley so that they can achieve they're dream.

Six students from the Harmony Science Academy are competing in the International Odyssey of the Mind Competition.

Odyssey of the Mind is an educational competition that puts students in the position of solving problems in creative ways on their own.

"It's really fun we get to do things on our own and figure things out with no help, its just really fun," Matthew Walker, a Harmony 8th grade student, said.

This group of students landed first place out of all middle school students in Texas in just their first year entering the competition.  They earned a spot out of  the 800 teams from over 25 countries to compete in the world finals this year in Iowa.

But, they're faced with they're biggest challenge yet; getting there.

"We face a critical thinking problem here of raising $7,000 in five weeks," Tom Walker, Co-coach of the Harmony team, said.

Walker said not being able to compete would crush these kids.

"If we don't raise the funds, then these kids wont get the opportunity to compete, which will rob them of their fun," Walker added.

And so he and his students are looking for any and all help so that they can achieve the dream they have worked since September to achieve.

If you would like to help the Harmony students get to Iowa, you can e-mail Tom Walker at twalker@centraltexasheart.com or check out www.hsabcs.org for more information.
